I would like to welcome you to our restaurant Matadors. My family and I have been serving fine authentic Mexican food for more than 25 years in Phoenix, Arizona. Our restaurant has become a tradition for many Arizona family gatherings and well as the jet set (Sammy Davis Jr., Clint Eastwood just to name a few.) You also might catch many local, state and national politicians at a table right next to you.
We are well known for our frothy margaritas, our delicious Mexican entrees and our "Greek Taco's". Everything in Matadors is made fresh daily. Nothing comes from a can and there are no preservatives. Our salsa, hot sauce, guacamole, tamales and everything else is homemade. The tacos are made from shredded beef, not ground meat. We even make our own Menudo with tripe, beef feet (patas), hominy, corn and spices. Popular dishes include our Huevos Rancheros, Lengua Con Chili and our Beef Tougue in Green Sauce. Come by on Wednesday or Sunday to enjoy our Mexican stew called Cocido. When you do visit us make sure not to try one of our fantastic desserts including our deep-fried marble cheesecake.
Of course all of our fantastic food is available for take-out as well as party trays for group events and if you need to host your event we can handle groups up to 300. We have also added online ordering directly from our web site for dine-in or take-out making it even easier to indulge in our great food. There's no denying that Mexican restaurants are a dime a dozen here in the Valley of the Sun. But gourmet Mexican (otherwise known as "gour-mex")?? Not so common. Which is why you need to try Padre's Modern Mexican Cuisine, where authentic and delicious Mexican food is served with flair and not just a little bit of boldness. Co-founder Denny Durbin lived in the heart of Mexico for more than two decades, where, in trendy San Miguel de Allende, he opened the innovative and popular Agave Azul restaurant in 1999. This was the prototype for Padre's here in Phoenix, which he and his wife Ivanne and their son Cole opened on Cinco de Mayo 2004. Executive chef Ivanne was born and grew up in Mexico City and Cuernavaca, Mexico. Her training? "After cooking for a family of 15 to 25 nightly," she laughs, "guess what? You're a chef!" Chef Victor Romero, formerly of the popular Richardson's Restaurant, joined the team to further refine Ivanne's original recipes, add even more fresh ingredients and provide special interpretations of classic recipes. Pastry Chef Kyle Kobs came on board to add some mouthwatering desserts to the already impressive menu. Padre's menu will surprise anyone familiar with American-Mexican food. Sure, you'll find tacos, enchiladas and burritos, but even these are served with a twist, like salmon spinach enchiladas in chipotle cream sauce, duck breast tacos, and a burrito filled with chargrilled chicken, sauted mushrooms, caramelized onions, aaxaca and cheddar cheese. You'll also be tempted by an array of seafood and other delectable dishes, such as grilled salmon with an orange-chile triple sec glaze, roasted pork tenderloin with mole verde, and even pasta. Pasta? In a Mexican restaurant? Durbin says absolutely. "You'll commonly find pasta on family dinner tables in much of Mexico." You'll be lucky if you have room for a main course if you sample the great appetizers.

Sitting over one of the sweet, potent margaritas at Mucho Gusto - the one fashioned with house-made tamarind syrup is especially cool - alternating sips with mouthfuls of chips dipped into zingy, multichile salsa, I almost regretted my professional obligation to move on to the rest of the meal. Indeed, if the cheap-bag-quality chips had been better - they're Mucho Gusto's weakest link- I'm not sure I could have summoned up the willpower to get on with my work.
Despite the University Drive address, Mucho Gusto is far enough from campus, and just costly enough (entrees range from $10 to $16), to keep most students away. The setting is as grown-up as the clientele: wood accents, red banquettes, votive candles glimmering behind pre-Colombian masks on the wall, paintings of overweight grotesques in the style of Fernando Botero and tasteful vintage photos of nudes in the men's room. The inviting patio, with fireplace and heaters, is a plus at this time of year.

The culinary and geological highlights of New Mexico are sublimely embodied at Carlsbad Tavern in south Scottsdale, where a colorful, newspaper-style menu promises the zing of unique southwestern face, while rock walls, a flowing waterway, and a plethora of bat-themed decor ensures its engaging cave motif. This is a joint with palpable personality, where locals and tourists alike congregate to get their taste buds torched by the food and their tongues cooled by specialty margaritas.
The people and staff responsible for Carlsbad's long-standing popularity are an accommodating bunch with a tendency for word play (Carlsbad Tavern, Guano Canal, Early Bat Special, etc.) and exquisite, knowledgeable service. Upon entering, guests can choose the formal dining area or the bar and lounge that leads out to the expansive, bi-leveled patio. Inside, copper and tin fixtures and images of the old southwest are subtly illuminated in low red and yellow lighting, while outside the theme is carried out by adobe hearths and a wooden walkway suspended over the canal.
The menu, titled the Carlsbad Daily Guano, is famous for its adherence to the hotness that is demanded by those seeking truly authentic southwestern food. Their expectations are indulged with flare and humor: The Habanero Cheeseburger (lots of freshly ground habanero chile, mixed with lean ground beef, grilled and topped with melted jalapeno jack cheese) is prefaced with the warning, "This burger may cause temporary blindness or loss of hearing;" for those with trivia tendencies, the menu contains a "Chile Heat Scale" that lists the descending rankings of chile 'hotness'... as measured by what unit? "What are Scoville units, Alex?"
Anyone can tell you anything good about a restaurant, but history and reputation are usually more reliable indicators of quality than word of mouth and Carlsbad Tavern has been operating for over 13 years.
