Sarastro Restaurant
Mediterranean, Turkish
126 Drury Lane Westminister, England
|
|
Sarastro, named after the main character in Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’, is a theatrical delight for the eyes, ears and palate.
Appropriately located in the heart of Theatreland, the interior is a busy concoction of colourful stage props, flamboyant artwork, gilt furniture and heavy drapes. The relaxed, yet highly charged atmosphere is a reflection of the owner and ebuillent host, Richard Niazi. Passionate about food, opera and the arts, he will greet you like an old friend and make you feel instantly at ease.
Once seated, crudités are served allowing you to concentrate on the fabulous and inexpensive Mediterranean menu boasting excellent fish, vegetarian and Turkish dishes. Tempting starters include Fried Squid, Cheese Borek and Scallops served with Mushrooms and Artichokes. Main courses are accompanied by couscous, roast potatoes and a selection of fresh market vegetables. Chicken Sarastro is rich and succulent cooked in a flavoursome orange sauce and served with walnuts and raisins while Lamb Anatolian Style is equally generous, and served with aubergines and courgettes. Desserts are delicious, choose from sweet pastries, cakes, cheeses or the huge fresh fruit platter, featuring a proud pineapple surrounded by seasonal fruits.
The décor is an exuberant cross between an opera set and Aladdin’s Cave. Designer Richard ‘Salim’ Sleeman, whose work is not for the faint hearted, is so well regarded in Turkey that he was given the keys to the city of Anatalya. Choose to dine in the splendid restaurant or up in the opera boxes, which are mounted high on the walls and provide a spectacular view of the interior, then sit back and allow the opera music to stir up the emotions.
