Loft Bar & Bistro
American
90 South 2nd Street, San Jose, CA, 95113
|
|
With his popular Campbell restaurant, Capers Eat and Drink, Kam Razavi combined two all-American favorites - sports and steaks - and got rave reviews for creating an unlikely upscale hybrid. Razavi's newest project, Loft Bar and Bistro in Downtown San Jose, tones down the gourmet menu in favor of crowd-pleasing entrees, but switches up the fashionable ambience.
On the same block as the restored San Jose Theatre and E&O Trading Company, Loft's historic stone-and-marble exterior presents such a serious faade onto Second Avenue that it seems to be scolding Tres Gringos across the street. But Loft has a hidden personality. Walk into the first level, and you're confronted by a warm-hued bar nestled against the far wall, stacked with delectable liquors. You can dine here for a quiet, intimate experience, but the real action is upstairs. To seat you, the hostess will float from her greeting pulpit and usher you to the elevator doors. Loft's epicurean zone is accessible only if you ascend. (A staircase also leads to the second floor, if you're elevator-phobic.)
Upstairs, the restaurant opens into spacious architecture with the homey-chic feel of a New York artist's abode. Ceilings are tall, wood floors glimmer, an exposed exhaust system looks curiously stylish, and brick walls keep things grounded. If all old buildings in Downtown harbor this kind of hidden warehouse ambience, San Jose's long-promised renaissance may rest above the streets, a kind of hovering second city for the beautiful people.
The space is so surprisingly comfortable that it almost demands long-term visits. Which makes it a good thing that there are two bars (besides the first floor bar, a second, larger bar upstairs keeps drinks flowing). This upstairs bar seems designed to cater to Loft's second-story patio, a terra cotta colored space decked out in tables and benches.

Kirk's Steakburgers
American
2605 Homestead Road, Santa Clara, CA, 95051
|
|
Opening Soon...AFTER WORLD WAR II, Bill Sincere and his wife, "Kirk" relocated to California from New York. Bill had spent most of his life in retail, but wanted to try something new while enjoying the California climate. He considered sales but kept thinking about how restaurants in New York prepared burgers and hot dogs. They cooked them one at a time over charcoal, let customers add their own toppings, and served them with potato chips and great milkshakes. The basic idea was good meat served without fanfare. The only problem was that during severe New York weather, many businesses closed for several months. Maybe in California!Bill searched everywhere in California, but couldn't find anyone doing burgers this way. Just as he was about to give up and take a sales job at Macy's, his mother gave him a small loan and encouraged his entrepreneurship. The rest is history. Bill rented land on El Camino Real in Palo Alto, built a small building, found a butcher who would grind his steak, and opened the first Kirk's Steakburgers in 1948.Word quickly got out about Kirk's Steakburgers. First came the Stanford students, then the developers, and then the early electronic wizards (Robert Noyce, William Hewlett, David Packard, Varian brothers. Watkins and Johnson, etc.). Everyone wanted a Kirk's Steakburger. Long lines snaked along El Camino. turnover was fast. and everyone enjoyed chatting with Bill as he flipped burgers better than anyone around.Today Kirk's has four locations, has expanded the menu to include their signature French fries, garlic onions strings, and over 20 specialty steakburgers. And they still use the same butcher to prepare the now famous Kirk's Steakburgers. And if that's not enough tradition, there have been several second and third generation employees, which makes sense, since Kirk's has many second and third generation customers. Do you remember your first Kirk's Steakburger?
