The first Ground Round was built in 1969, and provided a "neighborhood pub" experience where everyone, including couples and families, felt comfortable. The restaurant had a limited menu with only 12 items featuring primarily burgers in a basket, snack food and pitchers of beer. The atmosphere was casual, relaxed and permissive. As the original "no rules" place, the Ground Round was a big success with customers.
During the early 1980s, Ground Round evolved towards a fun, family-oriented environment. In the 1990s, everyone, including families, began to dine out more often. People expected quality food and service, and once again, the Ground Round met this guest expectation by improving food quality, taste profiles, portion size, customer service and overall value.
Today, the Ground Round menu offers a combination of variety, flavor profile and portion size that is unequaled in any other casual dining concept. We continue to create a dining experience and level of service that surpasses customer expectations and provides a true value for our guests.

A car dealership may not seem the most inviting location for a bar-restaurant, but when, as in the case of Z Cafe & Bar, it has expansive windows, high ceilings and tile floors, it makes a rather perfect fit. Built in 1924 for the Howard Automobile Co. as a Buick showroom, this 1-year-old American bistro's home on Oakland's Broadway Auto Row just a few blocks from the border of downtown looks attractive. Z Cafe also has one of the best happy hours around. People from nearby businesses crowd in from 5 to 7 p.m. to take advantage of the 40 percent off cocktails, beer and wines. And though vodka is the specialty of the house, a fan of gin, bourbon or other liquor can find something to wet her whistle.
The vibe: Friendly and unpretentious. Bartenders and patrons happily chat with strangers.
The crowd: An assortment of locals, from construction workers from nearby loft projects to well-heeled cubicle dwellers letting off a little steam. A surprising number of girlfriends gather here to gab, celebrate and sip pretty cocktails.
Best seat: One of the stools along the granite bar. If that's full, the two-person tables along the window are quite nice. There's also outside seating for warm Oakland evenings.
Signature drink: A very "Sex and the City" drink selection from owner and house mixologist Mehdi Zarekari, with oodles of variations on the flavored vodka martini. The Raspberry Bubble ($8) - Champagne, Skyy vodka, Chambord and lemon - and Blueberry Lemon Drop ($7), a mix of blueberry-infused vodka, triple sec and lemon, served with a blueberry, are oft-ordered drinks. The bar also moves many a mojito ($7) as well as Blue Martinis ($6), a concoction of vodka and Blue Curacao so blue it hurts.
Killer app: Appetizers, such as the tea-smoked Z House Ribs ($10.50) and spicy sauteed garlic prawns ($10.50), tend to rule the bar dining.
