The Q Shack

Great 'Q' comes from all over the United States and while each region may have its own local favorite recipe, the Q Shack is the one place where North Carolinians, Texans and even Mid-Westerners feel right at home with versions of their down home favorites. The secret lies in our own special recipes and our on-site barbecue pits, where all of our meats are slow cooked and smoked to perfection.
We work closely with our local farmers and suppliers to assure that only the highest quality cuts are delivered. For our pork products, we work closely with local and regional hog farmers who raise their animals without the use of hormones and provide us the highest quality meats, fresh off the farm - never frozen. We buy organically grown vegetables whenever possible and insist on buying only farm fresh produce.
Our signature chile rubbed beef brisket and whole hog BBQ are slow cooked overnight (10+ hours) using a blend of N.C. hickory wood. Every morning, our pit masters load up fresh, local chickens, turkeys, pork ribs and sausage to make sure you have fresh, hot, tender barbecue all day long.
When choosing your sides, don't forget to get a helping of mashed sweet potatoes or our signature macaroni & cheese. Those two, along with a bowl of fried okra might just be the ticket for the hungry vegetarian in your crowd!
The Q Shack is a locally owned and operated restaurant that believes in serving farm fresh foods from local farmers whenever possible. We seek organic produce when available and use 100% trans-fat free oil in all of our cooking and frying.

It all started when I was a young child helping my grandpa cook BBQ. My grandpa, "Quillie" Gray of Snow Hill, N.C., was pretty well known for his barbecue. Growing up with grandpa, I learned that the main ingredients for good barbecue are time and patience. The first Ole Time Barbecue opened 1993 and we have worked hard to keep Grandpa's Ole Time traditions in our food and service.
We have recently been rated one of the Top Ten Barbecue Restaurants in the state of North Carolina and have been nominated as one of Citysearch's "Best of" nominees. So, by popular demand we have opened our second location, serving the same great food that made Ole Time Barbeque a favorite.
Our menu gives you something for every meal of the day. We serve breakfast until 10 am, including country breakfast platters, omelets and French toast. The rest of the day we serve some of the best ribs, chicken and pork with all the fixin's to make any North Carolinian smack their lips.

Welcome to Jim's Famous BBQ. For seventeen years, we have been Chapel Hill's place for real BBQ. Located a couple miles from the University of North Carolina campus, we have a spacious dining room that can accommodate parties of all sizes.
