Local 121
American, Bistro
121 Washington St., Providence, RI, 02903
|
|
Local 121 is part of a landmark preservation project led by AS220. The arts organization bought the 24,000 square foot former Dreyfus Hotel in 2005 and renovated it into an affordable live-and-work space for artists, with an art gallery on the ground floor and a restaurant - Local 121. The Dreyfus hotel, built in the 1980's on Washington and Mathewson streets, served as dormitory from 1975-2000, and had been vacant ever since. State Senator, Joshua Miller, and his wife Nancy Miller envisioned a restaurant that would not only stand out from the crowd and help define the downtown area as a "foodie" haven, but more importantly, create a restaurant that is ecologically, culturally, and agriculturally sustainable. Local 121 is aptly named for it's commitment to all things local as well as our physical location at 121 Washington Street. We take seriously our obligation to our customers of providing the best each season has to offer. Our mission is to serve the best locally-raised foods available: vegetables harvested in season by local farmers who care about the health of their land and your food. Meats raised in sunshine on our New England pastures, with no inhumane confinement, antibiotics or growth hormones-ever. We work hard to avoid serving anything that's been genetically modified, packaged in a factory or transported very far. Our suppliers are small-scale New England farmers, cheese makers, and other food artisans we know by name. It's our goal to provide warm, gracious service and share our dedication of locally harvested ingredients with our patrons. However, our commitment to local extends beyond our plates. We recognize that by supporting local artists creates balance and sustains the cultural life of our community. That's why we actively support our local artists, from the tiny butter dishes on our tables to the large-scale photographs you see on our walls.

Temple Downtown
American, Bistro
120 Francis Street, Providence, RI, 02903
|
|
The Temple storied past included two unlikely groups: masons and graffiti artists. Construction began on the building, which was originally intended for the RI Freemasons, in 1926. In 1928, work on the Masonic Temple ceased when funds ran low due to the Great Depression. Mason's walked off the job, leaving the building unfinished. Only the lounge, which was used for Masonic rites, was completed. The building remained unoccupied for nearly 80 years. During its dormant period, the Temple was a haven for graffiti artists, who left their mark throughout the structure. In the 80's the state purchased the building, which remained empty until its recent rebirth. Now the Temple is home to an upscale restaurant and lounge that still maintains the building's integrity and history. Their surprising dishes delight and their unexpected flavors teases the palate. Whether you're kicking off your day with a plate full of power starches, lunching with lawmakers or dining deep into the night, their reinventions of regional favorites using local ingredients comprise divine dining.

A rustic yet eclectic decor makes you feel like you're in New York City and Tuscany at the same time. Intererior design inspired by Pizzico founder and former owner Fabrizzio Iannucci and the eclectic tastes of co-owner's Jim Harris and Dan Teodoro make this establishment one of the hottest places to dine in Providence. The white brick wall of the main dining room is home to the works of local artists and photographers that rotate on a monthly basis. The granite bar and cozy lounge are inspired by the diversity of guests in a city that represents the classic melting pot image of America's greatest cities. Rue De L'espoir
American, Bistro
99 Hope Street, Providence, RI, 02906

Rue De L'Espoir first opened its doors in 1976, "the new kid on the block," according to Deborah Norman, in a city with only a few steak houses, Chinese restaurants, and pizza shops. Now "The Rue," as the Providence institution is fondly known by a loyal and ever-expanding clientele, has grown and matured along with Rhode Island's changing culinary scene.Starting out as a quiche-and-crepe bistro, The Rue now specializes in fresh regional cooking, with influences borrowed from France, Italy, and Asia. The restaurant has received attention in numerous travel books and magazines, including Esquire, Bon Appetite, Food and Wine, Victoria, Weekending in New England, Fodor's New England, and even This Old House.

Caf Paragon in Providence was first to open its doors in 1994. Spats Restaurant & Pub
American
182 Angell St., Providence, RI, 02906
|
|
The location now home to Paragon and Viva was the site of the original Spats Restaurant & Pub . This historic eastside restaurant and traditional pub was home to students, families and friends. Andy and Solan Mitrellis created a relaxed and friendly ambience of goof food, drink and a "great night out". It was not uncommon to see the Providence singers or the Cabot Street Theater actors unwinding after an evening of rehearsals. Before Providence's renaissance the word was, "I'll meet you at Spats". It was a small town back then and for many the "old" Spats brings back good memories of a time sense past.

Ruffstone Tavern

17 Metcalf Ave, North Providence, RI, 02911
|
|
Welcome to the Ruffstone Tavern! It has been quite a ride and it is still going strong. From the non-stop renovations to the continued refinements of our vast menu, it has been very busy around here. If this building could talk, I wonder what it would say? One hundred and thirty years of people coming and going. From the end of the Civil War, through both World Wars. From President Abraham Lincoln right up to George W. Bush, its history still amazes. We've made so many friends and have had to say goodbye to others as they moved to other parts of the country. It is like a big family around here. We hope you would like to become part of that family! Our menu reflects the history of the neighborhood. We've kept the Irish pub feel that has been here since the beginning of the Ruffstone Tavern as well as its pub-style seafood menu. But we've also added an extensive Italian menu with great appetizers, entrees, and a fine wine list that complements the delicious food. You will find our portions to be generous, our service to be friendly, and our atmosphere relaxed. All our food is cooked to order, so it takes a little longer but it is worth the wait. It is gourmet food in a historic tavern. So sit back and enjoy the Ruffstone Tavern, the food and its cozy atmosphere, and please come often.
