The Nimrod Restaurant & Jazz Lounge
American, French
100 Dillingham Avenue, Falmouth, MA, 02540
The Nimrod was originally two separate homes. The smaller of the two, built in the 17th century, was located near the ocean and was struck by cannon fire from the British frigate, the HMS Nimrod, during the War of 1812. The hole remains today, though the cannonball disappeared years ago. The larger home, built in the 18th century, was located on Main street where the smaller house was eventually moved. In 1922, both houses were moved on rollers hauled by a team of horses to the Nimrod's present location on Dillingham Avenue. The structures remained a private home for a number of years and then became a guest house called The Boxwood Inn. During the 1950's, the ownership changed and The Nimrod Club was established as a semi-private club and operated as such until the 1970's. Now open to the public, renovations and alterations have been made without disrupting the original colonial charm that so many have come to appreciate. The tavern is balloon framed and its hand hewn post and beam construction come from native locust and oak. Upon remodeling in the 1970's, the native pine sheathing was discovered. Some boards measure over 28 inches wide. Harold Baker, Sr., one of Falmouth's earliest Police Chiefs, built the three fireplaces. The fireplaces were constructed with the original 16th century brick that was moved from the structure's former Falmouth Harbor site. Jim and Gwyn Murray have operated the Nimrod since 1995. Jim previously served as Executive Chef for 14 years at the Waterfront Dining Room in Woods Hole and as banquet chef at The Longfellow's Wayside Inn, Boston Post Road, Sudbury. Jim is also a talented musician and has been a member of the Raw Honey band since the mid 1970's. Gwyn is a graduate of the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts where she focused her intensive studies on pastries and baking.
