PANGEA means "all earth" and it was the name given to the supercontinent when all the land masses on earth were connected many years ago. So why was the name chosen for an East Village restaurant? Well it was chosen metaphorically, because PANGEA's menu has many cross cultural influences, such as American, Mediterranean and Asian.
However, PANGEA is more than a restaurant. It is a second home to neighborhood artists, writers and actors, many of them finding that moment of inspiration while relaxing at PANGEA during the afternoon or early evening hours. The newest addition to the group, Kellari's Parea, located at 36 East 20th Street between Park Avenue South and Broadway is a traditional Greek restaurant, a Greek bistro that extends the restaurant group's reputation for hospitality in a warm, welcoming and relaxed setting. As the name suggests (parea means group of friends in Greek), Kellari's Parea is an ideal place for friends to gather for a casual meal, to share mezedes (small plates) and Greek pizzas along with an excellent selection of Greek wines, all in a homey neighborhood place that diners can return to frequently.
In addition, Kellari's Parea is a green restaurant. The interior design makes use of recycled and reclaimed wood, recyled paper is used for the menus and business cards, and the cooking oil is repurposed into biodiesel. Everything in the restaurant, from the physical environment to the food, is natural and organic.
The design pays subtle tribute to the Kellari name (kellari is Greek for wine cellar) with American oak wine barrels, displays of wine, and wood-beamed ceilings. The rustic design replicates the feeling of a country house on an Ionian island, warm with earth tones of beige and brown, cozy, comfortable, yet still elegant. The honey-toned floors and terracotta red ceiling wrap guests in a warm embrace.

The Bakakos family (George, Dino and Billy ) opened the Lafayette Grill and Bar in 1996 and besides serving traditional Mediterranean fare for breakfast,, lunch and dinner and special events, the brothers soon made the downtown landmark ( formerly Peggy Doyle's , a popular Irish pub) a cultural institution, as well. It now offers a performance space, art gallery and special occasion venue all in one. It hosts a monthly art show, live jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin and Arabic musicians, tango, dance nights, plus book signings, government retirement parties , professional networking events and, of course, belly dancing on Friday nights.
The art gallery has seen a changing monthly exhibition since 1996. Visual artists exhibit their work on the 14ft' white walls and exposed brick walls of the long and wide restaurant. Artwork normally changes mid-month and artists frequently host gallery openings at the restaurant to commence the new showing. On Friday nights, from 10 to 2:30am, the restaurant features live music with a Middle East melange of songs, instruments , and influences from the Greek, Israeli, Armenian, Arabic, Turkish , Balkan cultures. Friday nights also features belly dancers from around the world, with additional belly dancing held on the 2nd Tuesday and the 2nd Wednesday of every month.
Saturday nights at the restaurant are for tango. The dining area of The Lafayette Grill & Bar becomes a dance floor for traditional Argentinean tango. It's the only Milonga south of Canal Street. A class for beginners is included in admission: $10 cover-free parking available-from 7:30pm-5:00am.
