From Chicago: Oceanique is easily accessible from downtown Chicago. Take Lake Shore Drive north to Sheridan Road. Continue north on Sheridan Road into Evanston. At the first traffic light (passed the S' curve and the cemetery), turn right to stay on Sheridan Road. The very next traffic light is at Main Street. Do not turn. Go straight on Main Street for three blocks to 505 Main St. (blue and gold awning on right hand side of street). From the Northwest Suburbs: Take Rte. 94 to Dempster St. Exit eastbound and go straight for about 10 minutes. When you reach Chicago Avenue in Evanston, turn right (southbound) and go to the second stop light. This is Main Street. Turn left (eastbound). Oceanique is one half block on the north (left) side of the street.

Caf la Cave will remind diners of classic, white-tablecloth steakhouses that used to dot the city but today sadly are gone. Serving traditional dishes presented with quiet flair - where can you get Steak Diane served tableside? - and exceptional quality, this restaurant is ride to be "discovered" again by a trendy crowd. Some of that flair comes from the restaurant's unique setting: it is literally inside a cave, through the claustrophobic can opt for the more traditional seating in the La Mere room. Sounds corny? Quite the opposite: it's intimate and novel. Once inside the restaurant, you feel like you walked onto the set of "Ocean's 11" - it's modern and sexy, but with a cool, retro vibe.
Steak is obviously the main draw here and in an area filled with great steakhouses, this is arguably atop the heap. Chateaubriand and Steak Diane are among the tableside options, but the Porterhouse and Steak au Poivre have remained consistent favorites. One of Caf la Cave's strongest points is the attention it gives to all its offerings.
Many steakhouses fall apart when it comes to fish or pasta, but Caf la Cave's experienced kitchen, under the capable management of Executive Chef Jeff Myers, presents a superb sea bass and an exquisite Dover Sole, a dish actor and noted foodie John Travolta reviewed as "the best he has ever had."
Part of Caf la Cave's current obscurity lies solely in location: For years it has been rated an A-list restaurant. That reputation has never left it, but in today's buzz-consumed climate, classic quality steakhouses have found themselves being obscured from the public eye.

When the restaurant's founders, Chef Pierre and Judith Pollin, decided to retire, they had to look no farther than their own kitchen for an heir to their legacy. In July 2004, the torch passed from the hands of the Pollins to those of Pierre's long-time Executive Chef, Michael Maddox and Michael's wife, Susan.The start of each July will now signify a yearly celebration for both the Maddoxes and the Pollins.. Ironically, retirement signifies an independence from day to day work, and after 32 years in business this can certainly offer a new found freedom. Owning a restaurant for which you have worked as a chef for 12 years can also represent independence, one that only chefs who own their own space ever know. Pierre and Michael's work together earned them numerous accolades and awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award, the DiRona Distinguished Restaurants of North America Award since 1992, Wine Spectator's "Best of" Award of Excellence, Nation's Restaurant News Fine Dining Hall of Fame, and 3-1/2 stars by both the Chicago Tribune's Phil Vettel and the Sun-Times Dining Critic, Pat Bruno. Today Susan and Michael are continuing the tradition of running the restaurant as a team, as Pierre and Judith did..
