The darkly stained finish of the high-backed booths and glistening mahogany bar enhance the golden-rust sponged walls. Filled with energy, Colibri projects black and white 1940's Latino-film clips at the front of the house, while the open kitchen in back provides glimpses of its colorful cuisine in different stages of completions. This is restaurant wine the way it should be: easy to sample and compare, with the costs of experimenting kept to a minimum.
You're glancing through a wine list and noticing many interesting bottlings, many wines you'd like to try -- but you notice too that only a few of them are available by the glass. There are many layers of meaning here, most of them annoying, but the most important is that you aren't -- but probably should be -- at Annie's Bistro. The food is quite good at this small neighborhood spot in lower Pacific Heights, and it's fairly priced (a pair of real pluses), but the wine list is extraordinary. It isn't extraordinary for its length or breadth (a single page of entries, most from California) but for the fact that you can get almost every wine on the list by the glass or half glass (the wine world's answer to the small plate). Welcome to Beta Lounge. Our philosophy is simple - be comfortable, open-minded and by all means, have a great time! Beta Lounge is the antithesis of the "wine bar" and we wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, that is exactly why we created it. Although we're Bay Area natives, the swirl, smell & sip ideal has never appealed to us. Personally, we've always been more interested in sharing good times with good friends over drinks and food. Do we care what "the experts" say about wine? Not really! They don't seem like much fun to hang out with anyway. Plus, we like to think we have minds of our own. If it tastes good to you, that's all that matters. To keep things simple, all of our wines are the same price. Not sure which one to order? Ask us to suggest something. We won't tell you about the subtle hints of gooseberry or the notes of blackberry on the nose (seriously?), but we will tell you a few of our favorites. Now if a glass of wine isn't your thing, there are plenty of other beverages to try. Who says beer doesn't go great with a cheese plate? Feel free to try new things and most of all, enjoy yourself.
