The Whitney

Whether it's a snowy night in the depth of winter, a sizzling evening in the height of summer or a crystal clear midday Sunday, there's nowhere to enjoy relaxed fine dining quite like at The Whitney, Detroit's grandest, most elegant restaurant. Housed in a 115 year old, 52-room mansion with delicate, ornate wood carving, Tiffany stained glass windows worthy of a cathedral, and topped by Detroit's coolest lounge, the third floor Ghost Bar, The Whitney offers meals to savor and visits to remember. Its pristine gardens are a special place for outdoor dining, cocktails and garden parties offering everything from chamber music to deejay spinning and live bands. Our cuisine is succulent and savory American flavors, exquisitely prepared and served by a professional staff. Much of the food is organically grown and changes by the season to keep it fresh and offered only at the peak of its taste. Fish is line caught, not net caught, to preserve its flavors. Premium steaks and chops are cooked to your preferred choice. Paired with The Whitney's extensive and eclectic wine selection with wines from as far away as Australia, France, and Argentina or as close as Traverse City and the Leelenau Peninsula, The Whitney's 350-label wine cellar promises something for every pallet and every budget. An iconic Detroit building referred to as "the most elaborate and substantial residence in this part of the country" when it was built in 1894, The Whitney retains all of the charm and refinement of yesteryear while appealing to contemporary tastes. Its relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, friendly service and ambiance put guests at ease and brings them back again and again. The Whitney welcomes you and promises a memorable visit every time.

Centaur Bar
Tapas
2233 Park Avenue, Detroit, MI, 48201
If you paid attention in high school, you'd know that centaurs were wild, mythical creatures that ran amuck in Greece getting drunk off wine and eating raw flesh. <P>Thanks to centuries of progress and the Detroit bar scene, a Centaur is no longer a half-man, half-horse, but a hot bar. And although wine is still a staple for Centaur, so is the wide array of delicious appetizers, so leave your raw flesh at home. <P>"We really are an alternative to your standard nightclub, in our look, in our standard and in our vibe," said Sean Harrington, owner of Centaur since its birth in 2005. He's right. Centaur is a sexy date place and a welcomed change from the ordinary. <P>Located downtown, Centaur is one block away from the Fox Theatre, Ford Field and Comerica Park. But the location is the only thing in common with neighboring sporty destinations. This is not a sports bar.As for food, Centaur doesn't serve large plates, but small tapas-style entrees instead. Order one at a time as you sample each martini, or order them all at once and share with a date. Centaur will do it, and they will do it any time you come in.<P>By Liz DuewekeReal Detroit Weekly

Cobo Joe's
American, Pizza
422 West Congress, Detroit, MI, 48226
It's a stone's throw away from Cobo Hall and a short walk from Joe Louis Arena. Thus, the appropriately named Cobo Joe's is a suitable launching pad for excursions to either venue. The walls are filled with pictures of past or current players and are visible from every view. A dance floor is located at the front of the bar, with a pool table and dartboards at the rear. A big-screen TV is mounted at a central spot so the game is visible from any angle. The pre-game crowd is both large and loud when the Red Wings are in town, and best thing about being at Cobo Joe's on hockey nights is its proximity to the arena -- in other words, no shuttles, no parking structures, no problems. It's not just about hockey; Cobo Joes is a great place for weekday lunch with great selections on specialty pizza, generously sized sandwiches and burgers.

Caucus Club
American, Continental
150 West Congress, Detroit, MI, 48226
As you enter the clubby Caucus Club, with it's empty magnums of French champagne, unusual paintings and antiques, Tiffany styles lamps give off a warm glow. Moving to the back room with its beautiful wood bar and English Toby Mug collection, you are sure you have stepped backin time. Les and Sam Gruber opened the London Chop House in 1938 in the basement of the Murphy Telegraph Building. It was the top restaurant in Detroit and world-renowned. Everyone who was anyone dined at the "Chopper". The Gruber brothers opened the London Chop House North, directly across the street to handle the overflow of patrons, and the Caucus Club was born in 1952. The sister restaurant to the London Chop House has always been dark and clubby. Always busy at lunch. Judges, lawyers, Ad-Exec's, Stockbrokers, Bankers and Downtowners know it as the place to make and celebrate a deal! The Caucus Club has had many celebrities cross its door. The most famous would have to be Barbra Streisand who sang in the back room in 1961. Brought here from New York, the Caucus Club was one of Streisand first paying jobs. She was young and inexperienced performer. "Watching her was like watching the first brush strokes in a picture, she was creating herself." Les Gruber. Streisand left Detroit for an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jack Parr, and the rest is history! Although the Caucus Club has never been a private club, until 1971 The Caucus Club like many other downtown spots was a men's only dining spot. Luckily women broke that barrier, because the Caucus Club has been owned by a woman since 1993. The Caucus Club's classic cuisine has been recognized with many awards of distinction. Bobby Flay and his "Food Nation" visited Detroit and featured Caucus Club Sauted Lake Perch and Oysters in Champagne Sauce. The television program can still be seen on the Food Network now and then!

Detroit Breakfast House & Grille
American
1241 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI, 48226
The 3,850 square-foot restaurant, which seats up to 110 people, offers three distinct dining areas. Playing off of a living area theme found in one's own home, the first area is best described as a great room for the city. With a fireplace, multiple plasma television screens and comfortable seating, it is the perfect place to catch the latest national newscast, read the Wall Street Journal or network with Detroit's power elite. The second dining area, hallmarked by 19 foot-high ceilings, contains boardrooms and spaces for meeting and private luncheons. Large columns define the private spaces of the area from the public spaces. The boardrooms feature LED screens and technology capabilities for presentations. A contrast of traditional and contemporary styles distinguishes the third dining area. Half of the space resembles an intimate European courtyard, with relaxed, plush seating and floor-to-ceiling custom wallpaper. the other side of the space contains private booths in a very modern setting, with geometric-print upholstered cushions and abstract clusters of sunflowers of amber lights dividing the contrasting decors. International travel and business are part of the decor theme common throughout the restaurant. Airport-like signage directs patrons to restrooms and other key areas; time zone clocks from around the world adorn the walls- all in keeping with the idea that business drives the world, and in working together, Detroiters can do great things. Additionally, the entire restaurant features wireless Internet offered at no charge for patrons. The restaurant also features a full bar- perfect for enjoying a Bellini or Bloody Mary with brunch, a glass of wine from the extensive list with lunch or dinner, or single malt scotch or a martini to sip while relaxing with friends and colleagues. As with all of the Southern Hospitality Group restaurants, superb desserts are a kitchen specialty.

Metro Detroiters have long enjoyed fresh fish and seafood. At the turn of the century, oyster bars dotted corners along the burgeoning downtown area. In keeping with that legacy, the Detroit Fish Market at Paradise Valley is proud to offer the freshest fish and seafood. Our purveyors deliver a wonderful selection of the freshest catch to our restaurant daily. Whether it is from the shores of New England or the depths of the Atlantic, we are dedicated to serving the highest quality cuisine, matched with the perfect wine. At the Detroit Fish Market, we believe that a great lunch or dinner enjoyed with family, friends, or colleagues should be fun and reasonably prices. We have created a unique ambience that celebrates the turn of the century architecture of the historic building that houses our restaurant with touches of contemporary flare. Lunch time finds sunlight streaming in through our floor to ceiling windows overlooking downtown's Paradise Valley, once known as Harmonie Park. In the evening the glow of antique street lamps illuminate polished wood floors, 15-ft high wood ceilings and warm mahogany toned booths lining the perimeter of our restaurant with curtains that can be pulled for privacy. Wood tabletops add to our casual, upbeat and chic atmosphere. City and suburbs, eastside and west, metro Detroiters and Windsorites bask in the glow of a delicious, fresh, and simply prepared meal.
