Centaur Bar

Tapas

2233 Park Avenue, Detroit, MI, 48201

If you paid attention in high school, you'd know that centaurs were wild, mythical creatures that ran amuck in Greece getting drunk off wine and eating raw flesh. <P>Thanks to centuries of progress and the Detroit bar scene, a Centaur is no longer a half-man, half-horse, but a hot bar. And although wine is still a staple for Centaur, so is the wide array of delicious appetizers, so leave your raw flesh at home. <P>"We really are an alternative to your standard nightclub, in our look, in our standard and in our vibe," said Sean Harrington, owner of Centaur since its birth in 2005. He's right. Centaur is a sexy date place and a welcomed change from the ordinary. <P>Located downtown, Centaur is one block away from the Fox Theatre, Ford Field and Comerica Park. But the location is the only thing in common with neighboring sporty destinations. This is not a sports bar.As for food, Centaur doesn't serve large plates, but small tapas-style entrees instead. Order one at a time as you sample each martini, or order them all at once and share with a date. Centaur will do it, and they will do it any time you come in.<P>By Liz DuewekeReal Detroit Weekly

Cobo Joe's

American, Pizza

422 West Congress, Detroit, MI, 48226

It's a stone's throw away from Cobo Hall and a short walk from Joe Louis Arena. Thus, the appropriately named Cobo Joe's is a suitable launching pad for excursions to either venue. The walls are filled with pictures of past or current players and are visible from every view. A dance floor is located at the front of the bar, with a pool table and dartboards at the rear. A big-screen TV is mounted at a central spot so the game is visible from any angle. The pre-game crowd is both large and loud when the Red Wings are in town, and best thing about being at Cobo Joe's on hockey nights is its proximity to the arena -- in other words, no shuttles, no parking structures, no problems. It's not just about hockey; Cobo Joes is a great place for weekday lunch with great selections on specialty pizza, generously sized sandwiches and burgers.

Lola's

American, Eclectic

1427 Randolph, Detroit, MI, 48226

Good to know that after many years spent and countless meals eaten - exquisite, really good, so-so and I-barely-kept-it-down - as a food critic, I can still be surprised. It happened in downtown Detroit. And, of all things, it was wings. There's plenty more to commend Lola's, the jazzy, comfortably friendly bright spot that opened last September in what's been a cursed location just inside the Gratiot gateway to Harmonie Park. But, when I stopped by last week for a first-impression lunch, the chicken wings came to the table first. You always remember your first time.Chef (and general manager) Phil Jones is a man to watch. I don't know his bona fides, and hung up the phone when I started to call for a chat. For now, anyway, I want to hold on to the mystery. In photographs, and as he ate at the bar while we enjoyed lunch, Jones has what seems to be a perpetual hangdog look on his round face. Is he thinking about something amazing to do with stuff as prosaic as mac-and-cheese or chicken soup? Does he have a vision for combining seemingly disparate, mundane ingredients into a show-stopping feed? Did he get a flat on the way to work? Last occupied by home-of-the-slider Hunter House (it moved across the street into the newish Hilton Garden Hotel), the space shares a short block with a few spots that promised not long ago to be a rebirth for Harmonie Park, somewhat hidden between Gratiot and the theater district. There was the aggressively hip Intermezzo, a white-tablecloth Italian outfit with one of the coolest bars in the metro area. It closed in the summer of 2004 "for renovations" and, as that phrase often foretells, now is just a darkened memory. Next door is the Rhino @ Harmonie Park, a spiffed-up version of the old Rhinoceros Club in the warehouse district. It replaced a noisy but otherwise forgettable snacks-and-booze operation that never came close to getting its act together .If there's anyplace in downtown.

Caucus Club

American, Continental

150 West Congress, Detroit, MI, 48226

As you enter the clubby Caucus Club, with it's empty magnums of French champagne, unusual paintings and antiques, Tiffany styles lamps give off a warm glow. Moving to the back room with its beautiful wood bar and English Toby Mug collection, you are sure you have stepped backin time.
Les and Sam Gruber opened the London Chop House in 1938 in the basement of the Murphy Telegraph Building. It was the top restaurant in Detroit and world-renowned. Everyone who was anyone dined at the "Chopper". The Gruber brothers opened the London Chop House North, directly across the street to handle the overflow of patrons, and the Caucus Club was born in 1952. The sister restaurant to the London Chop House has always been dark and clubby. Always busy at lunch. Judges, lawyers, Ad-Exec's, Stockbrokers, Bankers and Downtowners know it as the place to make and celebrate a deal!
The Caucus Club has had many celebrities cross its door. The most famous would have to be Barbra Streisand who sang in the back room in 1961. Brought here from New York, the Caucus Club was one of Streisand first paying jobs. She was young and inexperienced performer. "Watching her was like watching the first brush strokes in a picture, she was creating herself." Les Gruber. Streisand left Detroit for an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jack Parr, and the rest is history!
Although the Caucus Club has never been a private club, until 1971 The Caucus Club like many other downtown spots was a men's only dining spot. Luckily women broke that barrier, because the Caucus Club has been owned by a woman since 1993.
The Caucus Club's classic cuisine has been recognized with many awards of distinction. Bobby Flay and his "Food Nation" visited Detroit and featured Caucus Club Sauted Lake Perch and Oysters in Champagne Sauce. The television program can still be seen on the Food Network now and then!

Roma Cafe

Italian

3401 Via Roma (Riopelle), Detroit, MI, 48207

The sense of traditional Italian dining saturates the place from the moment you pull into its Eastern Market locale, a few blocks from Comerica Park and Ford Field. Roma Caf is indeed 'old-world' -- its doors opened in the late 1800s, and is Detroit's Oldest Italian Restaurant. Old World charm seeps through the wood paneling in this 130-year-old house with an atmosphere like you are at home. Roma Cafe serves up a wide variety of entrees from your standard pasta dishes, to a number of veal dishes, polenta, and even the unusual such as sweetbreads. Top notch wait staff - very prompt, courteous and informative about the menu and wine selections, and even though they carry handheld computers to take your order, the tuxedos they sport lend to the old-world charm. Standouts include the homemade gnocchi and anything of the various veal dishes. The Roma salad with chicken, tossed table side is astoundingly delicious for such a simple salad. In addition, the cappuccinos are arguably the best this side of the Atlantic.Private rooms are available for any occasionFree shuttles to the all the sporting eventsRoma Caf is a great gift for anyone who lives near or is visiting Detroit.

Bert's Marketplace

American, Soul Food

2727 Russell, Detroit, MI, 48207

Centrally located in Detroit's Eastern Market district, Bert's is an unpretentious nightclub that highlights seating for 150, a great view of the stage, a bright and colorful atmosphere and a comfortable and relaxed outdoor patio. Accompanying the uncommonly stellar sounds is a very reasonably priced "soul food" menu. The chicken wings, catfish and ribs, with its award winning sauce, figure prominently.
But the centerpiece, first and foremost, is the music and Dearing keeps some of the best musicians in town under his employ. Bert's Marketplace has been showcasing the best in local and regional jazz talent since the late 1980s.
It is not unusual to see and find that all the finest musicians in town eventually come here to jam. Martha Reeves is a regular. Wynton Marsalis sat in with our house band and played for two hours one night. Branford Marsalis, B.B. King, Chaka Khan, Betty Carter, Danny DeVito, James Carter, even Boy George showed up one night. (as reported by allthatjazz.com)This is truly what makes Bert's, THE PLACE WHERE LEGENDS MEET.
