Victoria Tavern

30 Murray Street Hobart, TAS Australia, 7000

The Victoria Tavern is a Traditional British Pub, steeped in history. Twenty meters from the corner of Murray and Macquarie street¹s, the only corner in an Australian capital city to still have it¹s four original sandstone buildings. One arrival to Tasmania, all members of the Young Irelanders, were offered a ticket of leave, but they declined them. In 1850 after an escaped and then recaptured a public meeting was held, Smith O¹Brien¹s friends, admirers, sympathisers at home and abroad, anxious for the sake of his health requesting him to accept a ticket of leave. The public meeting was held at the Victoria Tavern, and a petition was signed by 900, included in the signatures were some of Hobart Town¹s most influential, and wealthiest men of that era. Due to this signed petition William Smith O¹Brien accepted the ticket of leave. Albert G Ogilive, an Australian Premier¹s, birth certificate states that his place of birth¹ is the Victoria Tavern, for no other reason than his father, at the time, was the publica
