The South Gate Cafe building dates back to 1901 when the northern third of the structure was built to house the first city fire department. It consisted mainly of three large bays that were used for horse drawn fire wagons. In the mid-1920's the city more than doubled the building to accommodate its police station and new fire engines. When the City built a new public safety facility in 1968, the building went into semi-retirement for nearly 12 years.
Then in 1980, the building was purchased from the City by Larry Ross and a small group who rehabilitated it as the South Gate Cafe. The name is derived from the street along its north border, which was Howard Van Doren Shaw's planned entrance or gateway to Market Square.
Seventeen years later, the South Gate Group put a final addition on the east side of the building that houses the Bank Lane Bistro and Bank Lane Bakery. The Bistro is a small, casual Contemporary-American restaurant with a wood burning oven, located on the second floor. The Bakery is on the main floor, bakes its own breads daily, and is open for self-service breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Great care has been taken each step of the way to compliment the architectural integrity and beauty of the original structure and to enhance it with extensive landscaping and an outdoor patio.
The building has been certified as a National Historic Landmark.

The Lantern has been a part of Lake Forest since 1934. The original owner was Mike Lamorra, owners have included, Earl Russell, James Peddle, Jack Hunke, Charlie Edwards, Mike Faulkner and Lou Taylor.
Don and Irene Tiffany have been the sole proprietors for over thirty years. Since then, the restaurant has tripled in size, the menu has expanded to include some new favorites such as the broasted chicken, barbecued baby back ribs, and homemade pot roast. In 2004 the Lantern finally acquired a full liquor license. Yet, despite the changes, the Lantern is still the warm friendly neighborhood place everyone remembers.
Don Tiffany passed away in December 2007. He will be greatly missed by all. He was a great man!

Mickey Finn's is a neighboorhood tavern (the old bar has been around for 80 plus years) and brewpub. Meaning we brew our own beer...over 25 styles throughout the year. On tap almost of the year is our "847" Suburban Wheat Ale, one of three stouts, one of four pale ales, and of course our Amber Ale. Our food is all freshly prepared by Chef Poncho, who has headed up the kitchen since 1992. Mickey Finn's food is not fancy, burgers, wings, pizza, fish and chips, salads and so on. They are all pubby, large in portion, and freshly prepared here. We do not purchase ready made food. If it's your first time get a burger. If it's not, try the reuben, fish and chips, the weiner schnizel, or the chopped salad...all yum. Most sandwiches and entrees are in the 9.95 to 12.95 range. Oh, and if you like wings...our are some the biggest, hottest and best you'll ever have. It's always good to call ahead and put your name on the waiting list (we do not take reservations). On Friday and Saturday we normally have live music in our Amber Room, Thursdays' we have acoustic music in the old bar. And lots of flat screens to watch your fav sporting event. The new Tavern Lounge is a great place to hang. With offerings that range from cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon Tall-Boys, to Stellar 75 martinis, assorted Champagne cocktails and over 25 delicious glasses of wine (priced from $6 to $13), the Tavern Lounge is cool.
The food is served on "small plates," allowing leisurely "grazing." Priced from $5 to $15; the food menu offers such delights as Mini Kobe Beef Burgers, assorted Spanish Olives, Spanish Marcona almonds, Fried Calamari, Shrimp De Jonghe, Saute Live Maryland Soft Shell Crabs (when in season), a delicious French Bloc de Foie Gras, and Steamed Mussels. These are just examples of the constantly changing food choices.
The environment was designed and decorated by Scott and Linda Jansen of Tavern and Firkin fame, and was envisioned as a relaxing, eclectic "Parisian lounge." The music is centered in downbeat house, Motown, blues, and funk.

We at Washington Gardens are proud of our name and the tradition and history associated with it. More than seventy years ago, in 1932, Grandma Angelina Scornavacco opened a beer and wine garden on the corner of Railway and Washington Avenues. The "Gardens" became a familiar and friendly stopping place to both locals and visitors.
In the 40's Tony and Ellen Scornavacco continued the family tradition of providing fine food and a warm atmosphere. In 1944 they served the first pizza to grace restaurant tables on the North Shore. Pizza soon became a customer favorite with the restaurant serving between 300 and 400 hundred pizzas on any given weekend.
In 1982 their son Alex and friend, Bill Bernstein, renewed this tradition at it's current location. Pizza has remained a customer favorite, however the full menu has become more refined over the years. What was once merely a pizza and beer garden has become a sophisticated yet comfortable restaurant with a diverse menu that has something for everyone.
In 2007, when Alex and Bill decided to retire, Jim and Michele Stoecker, acquired the Gardens in order to keep the tradition alive. With a long term lease in place, and no significant changes planned, please come and enjoy as the great staff continues serving relaxing drinks and fine food in that familiar and friendly atmosphere we have all come to enjoy.
