beaded embroidery - how to do? patterns?

Greetings, art&crafts-minded folks - I'm looking for information on beaded embroidery - it may not be called that. Need some tips on how to do, whether or not one uses (or makes) patterns, fabric to use as base. The project I have in mind is something that will be framed and decorate walls. Any suggestions or tips?
