Understanding World Politics

If you want to know why the world is in the shape it is, you need to go back to the beggining and understand the role money and bankers play. One of the best books on this subject is "The Creature from Jekyll Island" by G. Edward Griffin. It Explains how the Federal Reserve came about (In total secrecy) and the history of money. Its not an economics book by any means. It reads like a mystery novel

Another one (that is on my coffee table at the moment because of its searing analysis) is Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein.

Taking up suggestions to read Terry Pratchett's work and "Best of the Best". Will let you know if either worked on my journey to the Antipodes.

Rory Stewarts's Prince of the Marshes

The Scottish Diplomat and adventurer Rory Stewart has written a wonderful but ultimately grim book about his experiences as an administrator to two provinces in Post- Invasion Iraq. His work was political and practical in trying to bring at least a modicum of self-governance, order and social progress to the provinces of Maysan and Nasiriyah. He and his comrades had to negotiate with NGO's, the often recalcitrant CPA, as well as religious and ethnic factions. For a time these provinces were

provinces were relatively stable but left to their own devices the local powers, be they Sadrists, Foreign infiltrators, and rival tribes, etc...caused a collapse into chaos. They do not want freedom to do things; They want freedom from oppressive governments in order to pursue the reestablishment of the Caliphate destroyed by the Attaturk. Of course, George W. Bush's invasion has helped lay t

I'd recommend books that make my "Best of the Best" list, but I'm afraid if I do, I'll come off as some kind of pretentious prick, which I am, but.. first impressions and all that stuff :)

For me it always works with the diskworld-series of terry pratchett. Easy reading, the whole range of jokes, from sophisticated to slapstick, good drawn characters and lively story. But this is, i think, a matter of taste- some people I know do not like it at all.

Stuck on a plane with Mitch Albom's "For One More Day" threw me into despair. Good book but really heart-wrentchingly sad. Does anyone have suggestions of a book that will keep me smiling for days?

For books that will keep you laughing a long time I would recommend Vanity Fair, A Confederacy of Dunces, The Sot Weed Factor by John Barth, The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien or Molloy by Samuel Beckett.

There are some books, that are like friends to me for over 20 or even 25 years, for example a small paperback with poems from Erich Kästner, a german writer, or Hemingway`s "men without woman", or Alan Dean Fosters "Flinx"-novels. Sometimes, maby twice a year, I have to read and discover them new.
