Hi My dog Bella, who I took from some uncaring people, when she was 6 months old, will not stop helping me take the washing off the line (that's a joking way of putting it). I don't know how to stop her doing this. I thought at first it was when I went out but I see she is doing it even if I'm at home. She knows she has done wrong when I ask her "what's this?" - she puts her tail down and disappears but eventhough she knows it is wrong she will not stop! HELP! So many clothes gone to the bin.

I would suggest you put Bella in a kennel on wash day or dry your clothes in a dryer... that's what I have to do! Good luck.

Does she have any toys? I only ask because it either sounds like she's playing or maybe she's trying to get attention. Yes, she knows she's done wrong, but it definately gets her more attention. And inevitabley after the finger pointing session, there's bound to be a bit of making up :) After being with an unloving family and now suddenly having a caring owners, she might be very enthusiatic and showing some 'Joi de vive'. Animals are very much like young children, and many of the same rules apply. Maybe consider doggie training school? I think water is the best training tool. When you catch her in the act, throw a bucket of water at her, or squirt her (gently) with the hose... But remember that animals have a very short memory/attention span, so there's no point in reprimanding them too late after the fact, as it confuses them and they don't know what they did wrong. All they know is that you're cross, and they respond to that. I wish you good luck in finding a resolution to your dilemma :)

Thanks for the advice - I do appreciate it. Bella does have toys - too many. I truly believe in my heart that she is trying to show Joy in having found a home (and we all know how difficult it is to have animals find homes). This is a decent home - nothing fancy - just an animal loving environment. She is highly intelligent and I know, that she knows, that she got a home against the odds. She is beautiful, has been spayed, but its now time to let her learn that enough is enough. It hurts to moan at her but I have to do it. Just now I will have someone else's clothes on the line and they will be destroyed too. Bye and thanks again.

Hi This is a side note. There has been this cat here on the news in the USA named Jack the Cat. You can find the story and vid online at cnn. He goes out at night and steals clothes from OTHER peoples line. lol Then he put's them on his person's door step. Cat's like to bring gifts to their people. It's usually a dead mouse. I don't know which of these is worse? Well, the poor woman who owns Jack now has a clothes line in her front yard by the road with all the stolen clothes hanging for the neighbors to claim. With your Bella... I really agree with the poster that you can't reprimand a pet for something that happened while you were gone. You are going to have to retrain Bella while you are hanging clothes. of course. A spray bottle with water tucked into your belt as you work. When she comes at the clothes a very sharp word at the same time as the spray. You don't hit her in the face per se with the water. Even to her neck area. It's just to punctuate what you say. GL

Well I never! A cat stealing clothes.....wonder what is going through its mind? My mother had 23 cats at one stage, many years back, and one of her cats, named Roland du Bois, was so in love with her, that he would sit alongside the Hibicus trees, when in flower, as if chosing which one he wanted, jump up snapping it from its stem and bringing it inside and laying it at her feet! Quite a story but really true. I'm wondering now whether Bella isn't thinking that she's bringing me gifts?......us human's will never know but I do strongly believe it had to do with her 'sad' few starting months of her life without attention. I know I'm not giving her much but she knows that I love her. Thanks everyone for the advice - I think the answer is quite straight forward - seeking attention!

I have a foster dog who does the same thing but only with dirty washing from the linen box (lots of stuff chewed up but now have a brick on top of the box)- I've been told this is for comfort as the clothes smell of me (embarrasing but blunt) which I can kind of understand of a dog, as she's been thru some bad times, but I can't think why your dog likes clean clothes. Maybe you can give him one or two old things that do smell of you.

Furthermore to my dog Bella, who takes the washing off the line and destroys some items, I have perhaps found something that might work. I've tied balloons to the washing line in the hope that they will pop when she is up to her nonsense. Even if they pop whilst she is not doing it, it might also give her a small surprise. I'll let you all now of the outcome in a few weeks, hopefully this is my answer!
