On top of cross training I would also suggest trying to work on your stride and looking into minimalist running. Its not for everyone but I used to heel strike really badly and I had stress fractures in both shins. I tried everything from physical therapy to orthotics but nothing worked untill I switched to VFF's. Running barefoot forced me to run with a more efficient and natural stride. I went not being able to run a 5k to running a half marathon pain free in 3 months. Best decision I ever made :)

Hey Mexicolady, I suspect that your problem is muscle imbalance. I had some issues like this as I trained for NY marathon last year. To fix it, you need to cross train. Strengthen your core (when it's weak, you tend to sink into your hips as you fatigue, this is what's giving you the pain I suspect... I did the same!) also strengthen your hips.. Good luck! And keep running!

I know exactly how you feel. Running is my life. While you suffer from hip pains, I suffer from shin splints. I was diagnosed this a couple of years ago by my physiotherapist. He told me that once you have it, you never fully cover. Didn't believe him then, but now I do because running for me isn't what it used to be. I mean I still get that adrenaline rush and all, but when the pain kicks in, the ride is over no matter how much you want to keep going. I'm sure you've heard plenty of times already about the different reasons why runners get injuries. The two major reasons being overtraining and poor technique. I'm guilty of overtraining, or to be more precise, overrunning. Now I don't know what your running habits are or what your running technique is like, but I can suggest you this. Try having on and off seasons for running, For example, I run during the spring and summer season and do other cardiovascular activities (i.e. elliptical trainer, stationary cycling, walking) during the fall and winter season. The results have been great for me because this way I can give my running muscles a rest for half the year and heal whatever injuries I've accumulated during the spring/summer period. Now if you're like myself and want to keep your legs strong and your body lean and fit, weight train, eat right, and you can be in your best fitness all year. I hope this helps.

I would suggest the same. I am professional coach, and a member of National Olympic Team but in other sport. Adaptation is a key. Your body will send you lots of messages, but you have to understand that they are only warnings. In most cases the massages have nothing to do with reality. The messages are only signal that your body is entering unknown zone.
