During world war II the Reading Hardware Company made armor plate for the war effort. Helmets, shell casings, armor plate for tanks, bomb fuses, and light armor plate for the bottom of airplane seats were all manufactured here.
In the early 1950's, the Reading Hardware Company closed its doors for various reasons. Since then,many of the buildings have been torn down, while the remaining structures have been rented as industrial warehouse space or converted into apartments (the Riverloft). In the early 1960's the J.E. Tobacco company was a major tenant in this building with its cigarette and candy distributorship (in the current brewery area) and catalogue showroom (in the current pub and restaurant areas). After Jetco, threshold rehabilitation services rented the space for their microfilming operations and the photo license center.
In 1995, the Baushers and McShanes joined forces to create the Neversink Brewery and Canal Street Pub and Restaurant. Construction began in January 1996 with the Grand Opening on July 31. The Canal Street Pub and Restaurant is like no other space in Berks County. It combines an unusual atmosphere with great food and great beer.

As a child at the age of six. William Mount a vision of someday becoming a chef and owning his own restaurant. In 1974, at the age of eighteen, Bill worked in his first restaurant and upon graduation, was offered the position of head chef. Because he achieved the honor of Best Restaurant in Delaware County, several articles were written about him in local papers. In the years ahead, Bill was educated at La Cuisine Academy in Baltimore, Maryland and obtained his degree in hotel and restaurant management and has had the wonderful opportunity of working under some of the best chefs in the area.
After the experience of opening both the Iron Master and Downtown Motor Inn, working at Covatto's Britton Lodge, and Yellow House over the course of twelve years, Bill decided to venture out on his own. Since purchasing the Maple Springs Deli in 1995, Bill has received nothing short of incredible support from the community. Maple Springs Deli has undergone many remodeling projects, which have afforded Bill and his employees the opportunity to provide high quality food and service at reasonable prices. Bill has been affiliated with the Berks County Chef Association for the past five years and has assisted in its fundraising efforts for charities.

Originally Seifrit's Grist Mill established circa 1773, the building that is now Christine's Creekside Inn was converted into a knitting mill in the early 1900s. Later, during Prohibition, it was used as a "Speakeasy" or illegal liquor store. In the 1970s, the property was purchased by the Babb family and was converted into a fine dining establishment. "The Old Mill Inn". Today, the restaurant is owned and run by the former chef of the Babb family, Doug Delong, and his wive, Christine.Christine's Creekside Inn is located in Robeson Township, which was settled in 1720, and incorporated Aug. 1729 while part of Lancaster Co.. Berks County started being settled around 1700.Christine's Creekside Inn is located off of the Allegheny Creek.
