The Horse & Hound Inn

The origin of the Horse & Hound Inn long predates the American Revolutionary War. While 1749 provides the earliest known record of the house as an inn, it was built as a homestead prior to this date. It served as a mason schoolhouse, a gin and rum mill, and also a stage coach stop on the Old Post Road from New York City to Danbury. The adjoining building served as a blacksmith shop for servicing guests horses and travelers along the Post Road.
Since early times, the quiet charm of South Salem has changed little. As a landmark in the community, the Inn retains it's peaceful atmosphere.
In keeping with tradition, your hosts Susan and Silvano Vales have tried to maintain the Inn's natural beauty. We hope you will enjoy your visit with us.

Jaipore Royal Indian Cuisine

Jaipore Restaurant is located in a mansion that was originally built in 1856 for a local county judge. In 1887, Mrs. Henry Ward Beecher moved into the house upon the death of her husband the great abolitionist, Henry Ward Beecher (brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe of Uncle Tom's Cabin fame). In the early teens of the 20th century the mansion was occupied by the Charlie Chaplin Studios and movies were made using the building as a back drop. The great director D. W. Griffith is reputed to have used the building in his movies and the cast of his movie "America" was housed here while the movie was being made. In the 1920's it was used as a speakeasy and in the 1980's as a topless bar. Fortunately for us, since 1993 this beautiful building has housed the Jaipore Restaurant.

The newest sister restaurant Thali in New Haven has been rated EXCELLENT by The New York Times - September 17, 2006. After successfully opening the Thali in New Haven in June of 2006, Executive chef and owner Prasad Chirnomula was dubbed "...the most exciting Indian Chef in United States," by David Rosengarten in the Rosengarten Report. It's difficult to believe Thali resides in the suburbs --it is so chic and urban in its interior. Dramatic with an overhead waterfall, a glamorous copper bar with high tables and chairs and a sleek private room in the back for parties. The New Canaan location is housed in an historic 1913 bank building. Thali's owner and chef, the incomparable Prasad Chirnomula has been a fixture of the restaurant scene over the last decade and has utterly changed the way people in this area think of Indian cuisine.
