We meet outside London Bridge station and then start a leisurely walk along the river to Hays Galleria where we visit our first pub overlooking the river looking across at the City skyline. Hays Galleria is full of craft shops and restaurants and the HMS Belfast is moored there. We then carry on walking towards the famous Tower of London where we cross over Tower Bridge and gaze at the breathtaking views of the river and London¿s famous landmarks including St. Paul¿s Cathedral. Horton Kirby prospered as a village in the 18th century when coaches stopped overnight on the way from London to the coast. The White House in the village is believed to have been the centre of a profitable smuggling business of spirits and silks in the 19th century. We walk alongside the river which swirls over some weirs. During the walk we can see one of the finest mills in the Darenth valley. A past resident there was the infamous Captain Bligh, who was the commander of the ¿HMS Bounty¿ during the mutiny in 1789. He later became appointed Governor of New South Wales in Australia with orders to clean up the corrupt rum trade which resulted in the ¿Rum Rebellion¿. The walk also takes in the pretty picturesque village of Farningham passing the site of a former castle and medieval bridge. There is plenty of interesting Georgian architecture to look at in the village. We stop off at a pub halfway round for some optional refreshments.
