OK to date if you're still married?

"Is it OK to date someone if your marriage is on the rocks, but you're not yet divorced?"
-Hurried in Halifax

Michelle: Probably not. If you're not planning on salvaging your marriage at all, once you move out, and start the divorce process, then it's appropriate to date, I think. You should also be considerate of the people you are planning to date, and let them know you are in the middle of a divorce before dating. If your marriage is \"on the rocks\", and then it does eventually come back together, you having dated someone in the meantime is going to throw a wrench in the works.

Adrian: You might also want to take a little time to \"get over\" the marriage. I don't know how long you have been married (or how long it's been sour) but jumping in to another relationship right away isn't always the best thing. Sometimes people think they're over they're ex's, but find out later that they're not -- and wind up hurting someone in the process.

Michelle: Yeah. Besides, you should enjoy your freedom for a little while.

Adrian: Leave your socks around the house!

Michelle: I hate that! Don't try to start a serious relationship right away, though; meet up with people as friends for a while, and take it slow. Nobody wants a rebound relationship.
