NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) Women Directors Film Festival - March 16th, 2019

This month NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) celebrates women behind the camera with an evening of films by female directors. The night kicks off with shorts program InFocus: Female Cinema ¿ Fighting the Good Fight, which offers stories of the struggle against the conditions that suppress us, as well as the assertion of the positive and its power to inspire us. The evening¿s centerpiece feature film is the Los Angeles premiere of award-winning director Pearl Gluck¿s The Turn Out, a striking look at sex trafficking at truck stops through the eyes of a truck driver who regularly witnesses its realities and feels compelled to help the victims. Pearl Gluck¿s documentary background rigorously informs the world of this narrative film with documentary elements. The night concludes with shorts program InFocus: Female Cinema ¿ Unlikely Allies, a collection of chance meetings, circumstances and situations that bring about unexpected collaboration. Throughout the event, attendees will have opportunities to mingle with the filmmakers, industry supporters and film lovers over complimentary drinks & cocktails in the premium reception room at the South Park Center in Downtown Los Angeles. Enjoy great films, complimentary beverages, audience Q&As and networking opportunities with the filmmakers, industry professionals and fellow film lovers! NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) invites you to celebrate up-and-coming female talent behind the camera with this month¿s InFocus: Female Cinema. The day¿s programming includes two programs rich with a variety of stories, genres and perspectives from female filmmakers, and concludes with an exciting new feature by writer-director Rachel Wortell. The evening begins with a shorts program that presents a combination of documentaries and narratives that tackle the experiences found in the overlap between sexuality, homelessness, mental health, disability, and cultural context. The stories we get to delve into include LGBTQ+ teen homelessness, deafness in Latinx communities, the cultural narrative around women and sex, and Jessie Adler¿s look at suicide in the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe in her documentary, Boxers of Brule. The program continues with the second shorts program, which includes stories of women and intuition, the frustrations of motherhood, female friendship, intergenerational conflict, and Kirsten Vangsness¿s directorial debut, the beautifully animated and uncannily vivid representation of an experience of a lack of safety all too familiar to many, Curtains. The night¿s line-up concludes with feature film Romance Analyst, a surreal, contemplative and undeniably funny look at one woman¿s relationship with her mental health, written and directed by Rachel Wortell. NFMLA showcases films by filmmakers of all backgrounds throughout the year in addition to its special InFocus programming which celebrates diversity, inclusion and region. All filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their projects which will be considered for all upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the InFocus programming. First come, first served. NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) hosts its November Monthly Film Festival powered by Seed&Spark and made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). The month¿s line-up includes highlights from indigenous filmmakers from around the world with an InFocus: Indigenous Cinema program, a collection of youth-made films in community partnership with Kids in the Spotlight, an international shorts program entitled "Mortal Bodies," and Los Angeles local thriller "Blinders" by director Tyler Savage. An All-Access Pass is $30 and provides access to all films, filmmaker Q&As and networking rooms. Single program tickets are $10 per film program.
